Recently, three state of the art cloud radars have been delivered and installed at the Ruisdael Observatory measurement sites in Cabauw and Lutjewad. With the installation of the cloud radars combined with microwave radiometers, a new milestone was achieved.
Cloud and precipitation research requires cloud radar measurements. With retrieval techniques, these measurements can be related to microphysical and dynamical properties of hydrometeors, which are particles containing liquid water and/or ice. This information can be used for a better understanding of the physical processes involved in the water cycle. In addition these cloud radar measurements and retrievals support the development and assessment of weather and climate forecasting models.
